Tile Installation in Norfolk & Hampton Roads
Tile installation is the most permanent flooring decision you'll make. Done right, a porcelain or ceramic floor can outlast the house's next two kitchens. Done wrong, it cracks, the grout crumbles and there's no quick fix. We take tile seriously for exactly that reason: the right product, a solid and properly prepared base, and one upfront price that includes furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal.
Tile installation that holds up for decades
Tile is the one floor in the house that doesn't wear out in the usual sense. A well-set porcelain floor doesn't dent, doesn't fade, doesn't care about water and doesn't mind sand tracked in from the beach. That's why it remains the standard for bathrooms, laundry rooms and entries, and why plenty of homeowners choose it for kitchens and whole main floors.
The trade-off is that tile is unforgiving. Wood and vinyl flex a little; tile doesn't. If the floor under it moves, the tile or the grout breaks. Nearly every tile failure traces back to preparation, not to the tile itself. So that's where our attention goes first.
Tile is also the most labor-intensive floor we install, and it's priced that way. You'll get one upfront price that covers furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal, and that includes the prep the floor actually needs. We'd rather quote a tile job honestly and lose it to a cheaper bid than win it and leave you with cracked grout in a year.

Where tile belongs in a Hampton Roads home
Bathrooms
Tile is still the benchmark for bathroom floors. It handles standing water, steam and daily cleaning, and it gives the room a finished, permanent feel. Porcelain with a textured surface gives better footing when the floor is wet.
Laundry rooms and mudrooms
A washing machine leak or a wet dog coming in from the yard won't hurt a tile floor. These are smaller rooms, so the cost of going with tile stays reasonable while the benefit is real.
Kitchens and entries
In a kitchen, tile gives you a surface that won't stain or scratch. It's harder on dropped glasses and on your feet than vinyl, so it's worth thinking about how much time you spend standing at the counter. In an entry, it takes rain, sand and grit better than almost anything else.
Where we might suggest something else
Over a bouncy wood subfloor that would need a lot of reinforcement, or in an upstairs bedroom where comfort matters most, luxury vinyl plank or carpet is often the better value. We'll lay out the options honestly.

Preparation is the job
A stiff, flat substrate
Tile needs a base that doesn't flex and doesn't dip. Over wood framing, that usually means cement backer board or an uncoupling membrane fastened to a sound subfloor. Over a concrete slab, we look for cracks and uneven areas, and use a crack-isolation layer or leveling where they're needed. Large-format tiles demand an even flatter surface, and we check for it.
Full mortar coverage
Tile that's only partly bedded in mortar has hollow spots, and hollow spots crack under a dropped pan or a heavy appliance. We use the right trowel for the tile size, back-butter larger tiles and check coverage, following the setting-material manufacturer's instructions.
Layout and movement joints
Good layout means balanced cuts at the walls and doorways, no slivers at the most visible edge, and grout lines that run true. Large tile floors also need movement joints at the perimeter and at intervals, so the floor can handle seasonal change without cracking. They're invisible when done well, and expensive to fix when skipped.
Grout and finish
We'll help you pick a grout color that hides everyday dirt and suits the tile, and we'll explain how to care for it. When the job's done, the floor is cleaned, the trim is set and the room is ready to use.
Tile doesn't forgive a weak base, so the base is where the work starts.
Tile questions
Porcelain or ceramic: which should I choose?
Porcelain is denser and absorbs very little water, so it's the stronger choice for floors that see heavy traffic or moisture. Ceramic is a little softer and often less expensive, and it works well on walls and in lighter-use rooms. For most floors, we recommend porcelain.
Why does tile crack, and how do you prevent it?
Most cracked tile comes from what's underneath: a subfloor that flexes, a slab with a moving crack, or tile set without full mortar coverage. We check the substrate, add backer board or a crack-isolation layer when the conditions call for it, and set the tile to the standard the manufacturer requires.
How long does tile installation take?
Longer than a floating floor. Tile is set in mortar, then grouted after the mortar cures, so even a modest bathroom usually takes more than one day. We'll give you a realistic schedule with your price, including when the room can be used again.
Is tile or luxury vinyl plank better for a bathroom?
Both are good choices. Tile is harder, more permanent and has a premium feel. Luxury vinyl plank is warmer underfoot, quieter and faster to install. If you're planning to stay in the house for the long haul, tile is hard to beat. We're happy to quote both so you can compare.
