Carpet Installation in Norfolk & Hampton Roads

Carpet installation is where this company got its start, back when the sign out front still said Dye Carpet. We still believe a well-chosen carpet over the right pad is the most comfortable floor you can put in a bedroom. Every carpet job includes an upgrade to an 8-lb pad at no extra charge, and one upfront price that covers furniture moving, tear-out, installation and hauling the old carpet away.

Where we started

Carpet installation from a company that began as a carpet store

Before it was Barry's Carpet & Flooring, this business was Dye Carpet. The name changed; the idea didn't. Carpet is still the floor most people want in the rooms where they sleep, read and spend a Saturday on the floor with the kids. It's warm, it's quiet and it takes the echo out of a house. What separates a carpet you love from one you're replacing in a few years is mostly decided before installation day: the quality of the carpet, the pad underneath and the care that goes into the seams and stretch.

Barry Duke built this company on three principles: do what you say, treat people right, and do the job right the first time. In carpet that means a few specific things. We sell carpet lines we'd put in our own homes. We don't cut corners on pad. And the price we give you is the price you pay, with furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal already in it.

We're not the place to call for the cheapest carpet in Hampton Roads. We're the place to call if you want a carpet that still looks good when the cheap one would already be matted down in the hallway.

Choosing carpet for how each room actually gets used

  1. Bedrooms

This is where you can lean toward comfort. A softer, denser pile feels good on bare feet first thing in the morning, and traffic is light enough that it will hold up. Over an 8-lb pad, even a mid-weight carpet feels more substantial than you'd expect.

  2. Family rooms and living rooms

Traffic patterns show up here first: the path from the door to the couch, the spot in front of the TV. A tighter twist or a dense cut pile handles that better than a plush. Color and texture help too. A slightly flecked or tonal carpet hides everyday life better than a solid light shade.

  3. Stairs and hallways

Stairs take more wear per square foot than anywhere else in the house, and every step wraps carpet over an edge. We choose durable styles for stairs, install them tight over the nose, and pay attention to how pattern lines up step to step.

  4. Where we'd steer you away

Bathrooms, laundry rooms and damp concrete are the wrong place for carpet. In those rooms we'll suggest luxury vinyl plank or tile, and we'll explain why rather than sell you something that won't last.

Pad, stretch and seams

Pad does half the work

Carpet wears out from the backing first. Every step flexes it, and the softer the pad underneath, the more it flexes. A dense 8-lb pad cuts that movement down, which keeps the pile standing up and the backing intact. That's why the upgrade to an 8-lb pad is included with our carpet installations at no extra charge rather than offered as an upsell.

A proper stretch

Wrinkles and ripples in a carpet a year or two after installation usually mean it wasn't stretched tight enough. Coastal humidity makes a loose carpet show it sooner. Carpet needs to be stretched tight to the tack strip the way the manufacturer specifies, so it stays flat through hot, sticky summers and dry winter heat. That's the standard we hold our installs to.

Seams placed with thought

Most rooms need at least one seam. Where it goes matters. We plan seams away from main traffic paths and doorways where we can, run the pile the same direction on both sides, and bond them so they stay closed. A good seam is one you can't find a month later.

Warranties that mean something

Carpet manufacturers back their better lines with real warranties, and many of those warranties require proper installation over a qualifying pad. We install to those requirements, and our own labor is covered by a lifetime warranty on qualifying installations. We'll walk you through exactly what's covered before you decide.

Carpet questions

What does an 8-lb pad mean, and why does it matter?

The number is the pad's density: how many pounds a cubic foot of it weighs. A denser pad supports the carpet better, so the backing flexes less with every step and the pile holds its shape longer. It also feels more solid underfoot. A lot of jobs go in over a lighter pad to hit a price. We include an upgrade to an 8-lb pad at no extra charge because it's one of the cheapest ways to make a carpet last.

How do I choose between carpet styles?

Start with how the room is used. A tight, dense cut pile wears well in a family room. A softer, plusher pile feels great in a bedroom but shows footprints. Patterned and loop styles hide wear on stairs and in hallways, though loops can snag with some pets. We'll bring samples to your home and narrow it down with you, room by room.

Is carpet a good idea in a humid climate?

Yes, with sensible choices. Synthetic carpet fibers don't mind humidity, and a good pad holds its shape. What matters more is keeping it off concrete that's damp and out of rooms where it will get wet regularly, like a bathroom. We'll tell you if a room is better suited to luxury vinyl plank.

Do you move the furniture and take the old carpet away?

Yes. Furniture moving, tearing out the old carpet and pad, installation and disposal are all part of the one price we give you. We just ask that you clear out small breakables, electronics and anything sitting on closet floors.
