Tile Installation in Smithfield, VA
Tile installation is the most permanent flooring decision you'll make. Done right, a porcelain or ceramic floor can outlast the house's next two kitchens. Done wrong, it cracks, the grout crumbles and there's no quick fix. We take tile seriously for exactly that reason: the right product, a solid and properly prepared base, and one upfront price that includes furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal. Professionally installed across Smithfield.

Built for Smithfield homes
Smithfield is an incorporated town in Isle of Wight County, on the Pagan River just south of the James. Its historic district holds houses from the 1750s through the 1920s, and newer homes have grown up around it. Flooring in Smithfield, VA means respecting an old house or upgrading a newer one, and sometimes both on the same street.
Smithfield was established as a seaport in 1752 by Arthur Smith IV, on the Pagan River south of Jamestown and on the south side of the James River. The area was first colonized in 1634. It is a town within Isle of Wight County, and the 2020 census counted 8,533 residents. The name is known well beyond Virginia: in 1926 the General Assembly defined "Smithfield ham" by law, requiring that it be processed within the town limits.
The Smithfield Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It covers about 200 acres, roughly bounded by the Pagan River, Little Creek and the town line, and includes 289 contributing buildings, 211 of them houses. They range from the Wentworth-Barrett House, built around 1752, through Hayden Hall, from around 1810, and the Goodrich House of 1886, to Hill Street Baptist Church in 1923. Downtown also keeps the Old Courthouse of 1750, and St. Luke's Church in the area is a National Historic Landmark.
A house that has stood for one or two centuries has its own rules. Original wood floors may still be under carpet or sheet vinyl, and they deserve a careful look before anyone decides to cover them. Framing may have settled, rooms are rarely square, and thresholds, door heights and stair nosings limit how much a new floor can add. During the in-home estimate we check the subfloor, measure floor heights room to room and plan transitions. If leveling or repair is needed, it's written into the price before you agree to anything.
The river matters too. Homes near the Pagan River and its creeks see the long, humid summers of coastal Virginia, and many older houses sit over crawlspaces. Luxury vinyl plank with a waterproof core is the floor we recommend most for kitchens, baths and main living areas, and a thinner plank can suit an older home where height is tight. For bedrooms and upstairs rooms, carpet over a dense pad is still the quiet, comfortable choice, and we include an upgrade to an 8-lb pad at no extra charge. Tile and laminate are there when a room calls for them.
Smithfield is across the James River side of the region from our Norfolk showroom, reached by Route 10 from Suffolk or by I-664 and Route 17, so we come to you for the in-home estimate. You get one upfront price covering furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal, with no haggling, no hidden charges and no bait-and-switch. Financing is available if you'd rather spread out the cost.

Tile questions from Smithfield homeowners
Do you come out to Smithfield from Norfolk?
Yes. Smithfield and the rest of Isle of Wight County are part of our service area. Our showroom is at 2811 Lafayette Blvd in Norfolk, and we bring samples to your home for the in-home estimate so you don't have to make the trip.
I found old wood floors under the carpet in my historic district home. Should I cover them?
Not without a closer look. Some original floors are worth keeping, and some are too damaged or patched to save. We'll tell you honestly what we see. If a new floor is the right call, we pick one that respects the height limits of the doors, trim and stairs.
What's the best floor for a home near the Pagan River?
For kitchens, baths and ground-floor living areas, luxury vinyl plank with a waterproof core handles humidity and spills without swelling. We still check moisture over crawlspaces first, because a waterproof plank won't fix a damp subfloor. Carpet is a good fit upstairs and in bedrooms.
Are there extra charges for moving furniture or hauling away the old floor?
No. The price we give you covers furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal. Any subfloor repair we find at the estimate is written in before you agree, so the number doesn't change when the crew arrives.
Porcelain or ceramic: which should I choose?
Porcelain is denser and absorbs very little water, so it's the stronger choice for floors that see heavy traffic or moisture. Ceramic is a little softer and often less expensive, and it works well on walls and in lighter-use rooms. For most floors, we recommend porcelain.
Why does tile crack, and how do you prevent it?
Most cracked tile comes from what's underneath: a subfloor that flexes, a slab with a moving crack, or tile set without full mortar coverage. We check the substrate, add backer board or a crack-isolation layer when the conditions call for it, and set the tile to the standard the manufacturer requires.
