Tile Installation in Hampton, VA

Tile installation is the most permanent flooring decision you'll make. Done right, a porcelain or ceramic floor can outlast the house's next two kitchens. Done wrong, it cracks, the grout crumbles and there's no quick fix. We take tile seriously for exactly that reason: the right product, a solid and properly prepared base, and one upfront price that includes furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal. Professionally installed across Hampton.

Built for Hampton homes

Hampton sits on the Peninsula, across the harbor of Hampton Roads from our Norfolk showroom: an old waterfront city shaped by the military, NASA and miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline. That shoreline is why flooring in Hampton, VA has to stand up to humidity, salt air and sand.

Hampton traces its origins to 1610, when colonists established the church now known as St. John's Episcopal Church, and the city claims to be the oldest continuously occupied English settlement in the United States. The 2020 census counted 137,148 residents. The modern city took shape on July 1, 1952, when the city of Hampton, the town of Phoebus and Elizabeth City County merged into a single independent city.

It's worth being clear about geography: Hampton isn't next door to Norfolk. The usual route from our showroom is I-64 through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, a 3.5-mile crossing of bridges, trestles, man-made islands and tunnels that first opened in 1957. Hampton is part of our service area, and we schedule estimates there with that drive in mind.

The military and aerospace presence is a large part of the city. Langley Air Force Base was the nation's first military installation dedicated solely to air power, NASA Langley Research Center is here, and Fort Monroe, the largest stone fort ever built in the United States, was decommissioned in 2011 and named a National Monument that November. Like the rest of Hampton Roads, a lot of households here run on military timelines, and floors often need to be done around a move-in or a turnover date.

The neighborhoods vary. Phoebus, named in 1900 after businessman Harrison Phoebus, grew up near Fort Monroe as a railroad town, merged with Hampton in 1952 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Wythe includes the Olde Wythe Historic District. Buckroe Beach and Fox Hill are among its other neighborhoods. The city has extensive Chesapeake Bay shoreline, and more than 60 percent of its total area is water.

For flooring, that much water means humidity and salt air for most of the year, and sand coming in on shoes. Luxury vinyl plank with a waterproof core is our first recommendation for kitchens, baths and main living areas, because it won't swell and its wear layer handles grit. Porcelain tile is a strong choice for entries and bathrooms. For bedrooms, carpet over a dense pad is still the most comfortable option, and we include an upgrade to an 8-lb pad at no extra charge. In older homes, especially in historic neighborhoods, we check subfloors and floor height carefully during the in-home estimate. Every job gets one upfront price covering furniture moving, tear-out, installation and disposal.

Hampton FAQs

Tile questions from Hampton homeowners

Do you really come over to Hampton from Norfolk?

Yes. Hampton is part of our service area. It's across the water, so we plan the trip through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and book your in-home estimate at a time that makes sense. Tell us where you are when you call.

What's the best floor for a Hampton home near the water?

For the main living areas, a quality luxury vinyl plank with a waterproof core and a strong wear layer. It handles humidity, salt air and sand better than wood-based floors. Put a good mat at the door, and keep carpet for the bedrooms.

Is flooring an older home in Phoebus or Olde Wythe any different?

It can be. Older houses often have several layers of flooring, subfloors that have settled over the decades and door and trim heights that limit how thick a new floor can be. We take time at the in-home estimate to check what is underneath and measure clearances, and any leveling or repair goes into the upfront price before you agree to anything.

Can I see samples without crossing the water?

Yes. We bring samples to your home in Hampton for the in-home estimate, so you can see them in your own light. If you would like to browse first, the showroom is at 2811 Lafayette Blvd in Norfolk.

Porcelain or ceramic: which should I choose?

Porcelain is denser and absorbs very little water, so it's the stronger choice for floors that see heavy traffic or moisture. Ceramic is a little softer and often less expensive, and it works well on walls and in lighter-use rooms. For most floors, we recommend porcelain.

Why does tile crack, and how do you prevent it?

Most cracked tile comes from what's underneath: a subfloor that flexes, a slab with a moving crack, or tile set without full mortar coverage. We check the substrate, add backer board or a crack-isolation layer when the conditions call for it, and set the tile to the standard the manufacturer requires.
